Accessibility Statement

Lyon County Historical Society

The Lyon County Historical Society is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We are continually working to improve the user experience for everyone and to apply the relevant accessibility standards to this website.

This statement applies to the following websites, both operated by the Lyon County Historical Society to honor the veterans of Lyon County:

  • veterans.lyoncomuseum.org — the informational website
  • lyoncounty.findyourveteran.com — the veterans search registry, embedded within the informational website

Measures to support accessibility

The Lyon County Historical Society works with its web development contractor to support the accessibility of this website through the following measures:

  • Accessibility is considered from the outset of each development project
  • Content and components are tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines during development
  • Accessibility issues identified through automated and manual testing are addressed
  • A good-faith effort is made to remediate content produced by third-party tools and plugins where feasible

Conformance status

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. They define three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA.

This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. “Partially conformant” means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard.

This conformance target was selected in accordance with the State of Minnesota Digital Accessibility Standard and the terms of the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund grant (a component of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment) that helped fund this project.

Known limitations

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility, some known limitations exist on this website. We are working to address these, and we welcome feedback if you encounter any issues not listed below.

Veterans search registry: The veterans search registry is operated by the Lyon County Historical Society and is embedded within the informational website. Users relying on assistive technology, or searching the registry, may encounter the following:

  • Some interactive elements or headings may be announced more than once by screen readers
  • Some interactive elements may not expose the most accurate ARIA roles or labels to assistive technology
  • The search function returns the most reliable results for exact matches; results may be limited when search terms contain typographical variations or alternate spellings
  • Individual record content — including names, dates, service details, and other biographical information — reflects the information that has been entered into the registry. Some records may contain errors or omissions that affect how they appear in search results. These are reviewed and corrected on a continuous basis as part of our ongoing maintenance of the registry.

Remediation of the registry, including both accessibility improvements and record accuracy, is continuous. If you are unable to locate a record, or if you believe a record contains an error, please contact us using the information below and we will assist you directly.

Website builder components: Portions of this website are built using Elementor, a WordPress page builder. Some Elementor widgets may have minor accessibility limitations at the markup level that are outside of our direct control. We monitor these and apply fixes or workarounds where feasible.

Third-party content: Content or functionality provided by external services, plugins, or embedded tools may not fully conform to WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We work with vendors where possible to improve conformance and provide alternatives on request.

Assessment approach

The accessibility of this website was assessed through a combination of the following methods:

  • Self-evaluation conducted by the web development contractor on behalf of the Lyon County Historical Society
  • Automated testing using axe DevTools
  • Manual testing with the VoiceOver screen reader on macOS, including evaluation of interactive element states (such as focus, hover, expanded/collapsed, and error states) and keyboard navigation

Additional screen reader and assistive technology combinations were not tested as part of this assessment. Users of other assistive technologies may encounter issues not identified in our internal testing, and we encourage them to use the contact information above to report any barriers.
