Privacy Policy

Lyon County Historical Society

Last Updated: April 22, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how Lyon County Historical Society (“we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, and protects information in connection with veterans.lyoncomuseum.org (the “Site”) and the Find Your Veteran Registry, accessible on the primary and registry-specific site. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices.

1. About This Site and the Registry

Lyon County Historical Society is a member-supported nonprofit organization. This Privacy Policy covers two properties:

  • The primary website at veterans.lyoncomuseum.org, which provides general information and resources to the public.
  • The Find Your Veteran Registry at lyoncounty.findyourveteran.com, a searchable database of veteran records maintained for historical and public interest purposes.

2. Information We Collect

a. Primary Website — Information You Provide Voluntarily

We offer a contact form through which you may choose to submit:

  • Your name
  • Your email address
  • A message

Submission of this form is entirely voluntary. You are not required to provide this information to use the Site.

b. Primary Website — Information Collected Automatically

When you visit the Site, certain information is collected automatically through standard web technologies. This may include:

  • Your IP address
  • Browser type and version
  • Operating system
  • Pages visited and time spent on each page
  • Referring URLs (the page you visited before arriving at our Site)
  • Date and time of your visit

This information is collected through Google Analytics and standard WordPress functionality (such as server logs). It does not identify you personally on its own.

c. Veteran Search Registry — How Records Are Sourced

The Registry contains records about veterans. It is important to understand how this information is collected and maintained:

  • Public records — Many records in the Registry are sourced from publicly available government documents, military service records, and historical records.
  • Voluntary submissions — Some records are provided voluntarily by veterans, their families, or other contributors.

The Registry does not collect personal information through the website itself. We do not use web forms, cookies, or tracking tools to gather the information contained in the Registry. No personal data is collected from visitors who search the Registry.

3. Record Removal Requests

We respect the privacy of the individuals listed in the Registry and take removal requests seriously. If you are listed in the Registry, are a family member of a listed individual, or have another reason to request that a record be removed or corrected, please do not hesitate to email us.

We will review all removal requests promptly and in good faith. In most cases we will honor requests without requiring documentation, though we may ask clarifying questions to ensure we are modifying the correct record.

To request removal or correction of a record, please email us at:

  • Email: director@lyoncomuseum.org — please don’t hesitate to reach out.

4. How We Use Your Information

We use the information collected for the following purposes:

  • Contact form submissions — To read and respond to your message. We do not add you to any mailing list or share your information with third parties without your consent.
  • Analytics data — To understand how visitors use the Site, identify technical issues, and improve content and performance. This data is reviewed in aggregate and is not used to identify individual users.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to any third party.

5. Cookies

The Site uses cookies — small text files stored on your device — to support basic functionality and analytics. Cookies used on this Site may include:

  • Google Analytics cookies — Used to collect anonymous usage statistics. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking by installing the Google Analytics Opt-Out Browser Add-On (tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout).
  • WordPress functional cookies — May be set to support standard site functionality.

Most browsers allow you to control or disable cookies through their settings. Disabling cookies may affect some site functionality.

Cookies are used on the primary website only. The Registry does not independently set or use cookies to collect information about visitors.

6. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services, which have their own privacy practices:

  • Google Analytics (Google LLC) — Analytics and usage tracking. See Google’s Privacy Policy at policies.google.com/privacy.
  • Elementor — Used to power the contact form on this Site. Form submissions are stored within our WordPress installation and are not shared with Elementor.
  • WordPress — The platform on which this Site is built. WordPress core software may set functional cookies or log server data as part of normal operation.

We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party services. We encourage you to review their policies directly.

7. Data Retention

Contact form submissions are retained only as long as necessary to respond to your inquiry and for reasonable recordkeeping purposes. Analytics data is retained in accordance with Google Analytics’ default retention settings. Registry records are maintained indefinitely as part of an ongoing historical record, subject to removal upon request as described in Section 3.

8. Children’s Privacy

This Site is not directed at children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has submitted personal information through this Site, please contact us and we will take steps to remove it.

9. Data Security

We take reasonable precautions to protect the information collected through this Site. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

  • Request removal or correction of a record in the Registry (see Section 3)
  • Opt out of analytics tracking using the Google Analytics opt-out tool linked in Section 5

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the information in Section 12.
